CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of the Study
Learning English is a must. When we study a foreign language, we can have opportunities to get more knowledge rather than people who are not. In school, students have English as one of the subjects. To make the learning process successful, teachers apply discussion technique. The use of the method is still very rare so the researcher wants to investigate it further.
1.2. The Identification of the Problem
The problems of the research:
• Do the students at Ninth Grade Students of Junior High School 2 Yogyakarta understand the reading text after using the discussion technique?
• Are the students of Ninth Grade Students of Junior High School 2 Yogyakarta interested in the discussion technique?
1.3. The Purpose of the Study
• This research aims to know the use of discussion techniques in reading passages.
• This research aims to influence teachers to use discussion techniques in reading passages.

CHAPTER I

THEORETICAL REVIEW
2.1 The Definition of Reading Comprehension
According to Tarigan (2008), reading is a process that the reader uses to get the message of the text. The writer creates the work such as stories by using the symbol. Someone who reads it has to interpret the meaning. In short, we can say that this activity enriches knowledge and needs language skills.
2.2 The Purpose of Reading
The purpose of reading according to Blanton et al and Irwin (Farida Rahim, 2008) as follows:
a. Enjoyment.
b. Accomplishing certain strategies.
c. Using certain strategies.

Chapter III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In the research, the writer teaches the students of Ninth Grade Students of Junior High School 2 Yogyakarta in an experimental class by using a discussion technique. The test will be done using the traditional technique so that the students will understand the passage. The teacher analyzes the data using a t-test.

Chapter IV
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The research shows that the student Ninth Grade Students of Junior High School 2 who scored 50-53 are 6 with students with percentages 13%, while the students who scored 53-67 are 11 students with percentages 17%. Most of the students can understand the reading passage by using the discussion technique.
It can be said that some students have low motivation in discussing techniques. It makes them find difficulty in understanding the reading passage. When applying the technique, the teacher should use a creative method because most of the students feel bored with the monotone technique.

Chapter V
CONCLUSION

Based on the explanation in chapter IV, here the researcher wants to give some conclusion. The teacher uses the discussion technique to make the students more understand the context of the text. However, there are some difficulties in applying the technique; one of them is making the student feel interested. It is because she uses the traditional when explaining about the technique. The teacher should upgrade her method by using some technology such as presentation with PowerPoint. It will encourage students to pay attention to the teacher when she is explaining the material.

The existence of this phenomenon makes the teacher try to use storytelling methods to sharpen the ability to speak in public.

• What is the influence of using the storytelling method in increasing the speaking ability of students at SMAN 1 Sewon?
1.3. The Purpose of the Study
• This research aims to know the use of storytelling in increasing student’s abilities.
• This research aims to influence teacher to use storytelling in class

CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL REVIEW

2.1 The Definition of Storytelling Method
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the storytelling method is the activity of telling some stories such as fairy tales and comedy. Someone who tells the short stories is called a storyteller. There are 8 classic types of storytelling techniques for making the audience interested such as mono myth, the mountain and spark liner.

Chapter III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The writer uses qualitative research in analyzing the data. In deciding the sample, the writer uses random sampling and chooses 15 students from 30 students. The teacher asks the students to practice in front of the class. They can choose various stories such as fairy tales, folklore, and legends of someplace.

Chapter IV
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The research shows that the speaking skill of the eleventh-grade student at SMAN 1 Sewon after using storytelling technique is better than before. When telling the story, most of the students can present the content very well. Furthermore, they can use appropriate language. From 15, there are only 2 students who have low grades in telling the short stories.

Chapter V
CONCLUSION

In brief, the researcher concludes that student’s skill in English at SMAN 1 Sewon increases. After using the storytelling method, students have a better grade. The teacher is not only an educator, but also as a motivator. She has to motivate their students so all the students can speak English by using storytelling techniques. This technique is useful in improving the student’s skill. Here, the researcher recommends the teacher to apply the storytelling technique as one of the best techniques in teaching foreign language.
